Demetrius Fleming, 38, Found Dead in Roanoke Rapids, NC; Police Say “Everything Is on the Table”

ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. — Questions remain surrounding the death of 38-year-old Demetrius Eugene Fleming, who was found dead at a residence on Roanoke Avenue in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina.

Roanoke Rapids Police Chief Lawrence Wiggins has described Fleming's death as an “open, equivocal death investigation,” emphasizing that investigators have not reached a final conclusion about what happened.

“We are not working from any strict assumption,” Wiggins told reporters. “Everything is on the table.”

What Police Say Happened

Police responded shortly after 6:45 a.m. on Friday, August 21, to the 1900 block of Roanoke Avenue following a 911 call initially reporting an attempted suicide.

When Roanoke Rapids police, Halifax County EMS and the Roanoke Rapids Fire Department arrived, Fleming was already deceased.

Police said Fleming was found connected to a ligature, but investigators have not publicly disclosed the type of ligature involved. Chief Wiggins also said it was unclear at the time how long Fleming had been deceased.

The initial 911 call reportedly came from someone close to Fleming who was not at the scene when the call was made. Police have not publicly released further details explaining the circumstances surrounding that call.

Police Have Not Ruled the Death a Suicide or Homicide

One of the most important facts surrounding this case is that the initial attempted-suicide report does not represent a final official determination of Fleming's manner of death.

Wiggins said investigators were deliberately avoiding assumptions while evidence was still being collected.

He said the evidence—not speculation—would ultimately determine the conclusion of the investigation.

Authorities have also acknowledged the concern generated by the circumstances surrounding the death of a Black man by hanging. Police nevertheless stressed that investigators must allow the evidence to determine what occurred rather than reaching conclusions prematurely.

Autopsy Could Answer Critical Questions

An autopsy is expected to play a major role in determining what happened to Fleming.

When Wiggins was asked whether investigators observed any additional injuries on Fleming's body, he said that question could only be answered through an autopsy.

As of the latest verified reporting reviewed by Black Community News, authorities have not publicly announced a final cause or manner of death. There has likewise been no confirmed arrest.

Police Push Back Against “Person of Interest” Rumors

The case has generated widespread discussion on social media, including claims that investigators have identified a person of interest.

On August 25, Chief Wiggins directly addressed those reports.

Police said they were aware of social-media personalities claiming to possess inside information about the investigation, including a claim that authorities had a person of interest.

Wiggins urged the public to exercise “extreme caution” when considering information from unverified sources.

He confirmed that the investigation was progressing but said police were not prepared to release additional investigative information at that time.

Therefore, reports claiming police have officially identified a suspect or person of interest should not be treated as confirmed unless law enforcement announces such a development.

Fleming Remembered as a Father and Man of Faith

As questions surrounding his death continue, Fleming's family is mourning the person behind the headlines.

Recent reporting based on his obituary describes Fleming as a father of nine whose life included a strong connection to music and his faith. He attended Chowan University and remained involved with music through his church.

Police have expressed condolences to Fleming's family and said relatives have been cooperating with investigators.

What Happens Next

Investigators must now determine what the physical and forensic evidence shows.

Among the most important outstanding questions are the results of the medical examiner's examination, whether Fleming had any additional injuries, what evidence investigators collected from the scene and whether other evidence can establish the events leading up to his death.

Most importantly, authorities must ultimately determine an official cause and manner of death.

Until those findings are released, Fleming's death should continue to be described as an open investigation, rather than definitively as suicide, homicide or a racially motivated killing.
